Project Ember Staff Handbook

A fully illustrated staff training manual for an artistic engineering summer camp.

The Client: Project Ember, a Bay Area camp with a growing staff.

The Brief: Design and create full-color print illustrations for key concepts written about in the staff training manual. A mix of technical, comic, and informative illustrations are required, with a cohesive visual language preferred.

The Context: The Project Ember staff manual is a 50+ page book that is part training and part pedagogical theory. It’s used as curriculum for on-boarding staff and as a reference guide for tricky problems. Illustrations help ground the audience in the fun of a summer camp, but act as a needed visual aid for complex engineering designs.

The Process: I worked alongside the writers of the handbook both in-person and remotely. There were some known illustrations that I was able to knock out, but I was also responsible for identifying where illustrations would be useful as the manual was being written. I created both full-page illustrations and cute icons and everything inbetweeen.

The Result: I created over 40 illustrations for the Project Ember Handbook. The manual is currently being used by staff with Project Ember and the co-founders have plans to make the manual publicly available as a resource for other camps and educational arenas.
